If you’re dreaming of joining the grid in the UK, the first step is getting a motor racing license. This license is your official ticket to participate in competitive motorsport events safely and legally. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you get started.

Step 1: Order a Starter Pack from Motorsport UK

Before you can apply for a license, you need to order a Starter Pack from Motorsport UK. This pack includes all the forms, guidance, and information you need to begin your journey in motorsport. It’s your essential first step to make sure you complete the process correctly.

Step 2: Apply for a Club Racing License

If you’re just starting out, you can only apply for a Club Racing License. This license allows you to take part in entry-level competitive events and is the first step on the ladder toward higher-level racing. Once you gain experience, you can later upgrade to a national or international license.

Step 3: Complete an ARDS Test

Before applying, you must complete a Motorsport UK-recognised training course, also known as an ARDS Test. This ensures you understand the rules, safety procedures, and basic racecraft. The test consists of a theory and practical test. Check the Motorsport UK website for a list of approved courses and training circuits.

Step 4: Obtain a Medical Certificate

All drivers need to meet certain medical standards. Every licence applicant must complete a medical self‑declaration when they apply. MSUK will ask you to answer questions such as whether you have any medical condition that could affect your ability to drive or control a car (e.g. epilepsy, recent serious illness, or any other relevant physical condition).

  • If your answers indicate no issues and you hold a valid road‑driving licence compatible with the competition vehicle, you can usually proceed without a full medical.

  • If you do have medical history (or conditions such as epilepsy, fainting spells, or other relevant health issues), you may need to provide a full doctor’s medical report or vision/ECG tests before your licence can be issued.

Complete the Motorsport UK Questionnaire here.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

Once you have your course certificate and medical form, you can apply for your license online via the Motorsport UK website or by post. You will need to provide:

  • Completed application form

  • Passport-sized photograph

  • Course certificate

  • Medical certificate

  • Application fee

Step 6: Wait for Approval

After submission, Motorsport UK will process your application. This typically takes a few weeks. Once approved, you will receive your license, allowing you to enter official races.

Step 7: Start Racing!

With your license in hand, you can begin participating in motorsport race event and test days for license holders across the UK. Don't forget that each year you need to renew your license with Motorsport UK.
