If you've ever dreamed of lining up on a racing grid, feeling the adrenaline as the lights go out, and battling it out on a circuit, you’ll need a race license to get started. In the UK, your journey begins with the ARDS test.

Let’s break down exactly what it takes to get your first race license.

What Is an ARDS License?

ARDS stands for the Association of Racing Drivers Schools. This body governs the process for new drivers to obtain their first UK racing license.

To compete in circuit racing (like saloon cars, single-seaters, or GTs), you’ll need to pass the ARDS Novice Driver Training Course and earn a Race National B license (now called Inter Club).

The ARDS license ensures you understand the basic rules of racing, safety procedures, and driving etiquette before you hit the track.

What Are the Levels of Race License?

In the UK, racing licenses are managed by Motorsport UK. The main license levels are:

1. Inter Club (formerly National B)

  • Entry-level for club racing and many UK championships.

  • Requires passing the ARDS test.

2. National

  • For more experienced drivers.

  • Requires race signatures and upgrades.

  • Eligible for higher-level events and certain international races.

3. International C, B, and A

  • Required for international races (FIA-sanctioned events).

  • Higher levels require extensive experience and results.

Most new drivers start with an ARDS Inter Club license and upgrade through race signatures by completing events safely and competently.

To upgrade to a National you need 6 signatures, you can only collect 2 signatures per race meet so if you want to upgrade to a National grade license you will need to compete and finish 6 races across 3 race meets.

Need to upgrade to you can compete at a particular race meet? No problem, we help drivers source arrive and drive race opportunities. Enquire now.

Age Restrictions: How Old Do You Need to Be?

Motorsport welcomes drivers young and old, but there are specific age restrictions for obtaining a race license:

  • Minimum Age for ARDS Test / Inter Club License:You must be at least 14 years old to take the ARDS test for circuit racing. Some circuits allow drivers to start testing from 12 years old. (Note: Some disciplines like karting championships have lower age thresholds, with their own licensing paths.)

  • Drivers Aged 14–16:

    • You may be eligible for Junior Inter Club licenses.

    • You must race in approved junior categories like Ginetta Juniors or Fiesta Juniors.

    • A Motorsport UK medical is required for all under-18s.

  • Over 60?

    • There's no upper age limit.

    • However, you may be required to undergo a more detailed medical, including vision and cardiovascular assessments.

  • Parental Consent:

    • Anyone under 18 must have written parental/guardian consent to apply for a license.

Whether you're a teenager looking to join a junior series or a lifelong motorsport fan finally ready to go racing, age doesn’t have to be a barrier. As long as you're medically fit and meet the requirements.

What Does It Cost?

Costs can vary depending on where you take your ARDS test, but here's a rough breakdown:

  • ARDS Novice Course: £300–£500(Includes classroom session, practical assessment, and written test.)

  • Go Racing Pack from Motorsport UK: £109(Includes your application form, rule book, and essential materials.)

  • Medical Examination: £60–£120(Needed if you're over a certain age or applying for a higher-level license.)
